MARE E-SCIENCE

Scope (from: https://blogs.uni-bremen.de/mare/):

MARE’s aims are to develop adaptive, end-user-oriented and internationally-relevant curricula to support sustainable management and governance of coastal and adjacent marine areas of partner countries: Malaysia and Vietnam, and to create sustainable feedback mechanisms to end-users, ensuring practical relevance of teaching contents and knowledge co-production opportunities. The project will focus on the following issues:

  1. Coastal science and management: science, management, technology and policy issues related to the coastal zones and land-sea interactions in general; particular attention will be based to adaptive co-management and policy and technological innovation in support to adaptation plans; another major foci are tourism and urbanisation, and integrative solutions for addressing these challenges;
  2. Delta science and management: science, management, technology and policy issues related to delta areas, particularly targeting Mekong and Red River (VN); the foci will be on urbanisation, sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, pollution prevention and control, and sustainable regional and urban planning informed of ecosystem services and nature-based solutions;
  3. Area-based management: the focus is on policy and management instruments, such as marine protected areas, pollution control zones, or fisheries closures, and other institutional frameworks and marine spatial management tools, which are in use or under development in order to ensure sustainable governance of marine resources and to prevent potential conflicts;
  4. Fisheries, seabed resources & food security: science, management, policy and technology in support sustainable fisheries and sustainable seabed management; the theme further involves such governance aspect as interactions of actors, drives and impacts relevant for sustainable management of marine bioresources, trade-offs it involves (e.g. related to aquaculture, biodiversity conservation, urbanisation and tourism, navigation and harbour development);
  5. Offshore exploration & mining: science, management, technology and policy in support to sustainable offshore mining and exploration, recognising the scale and importance of the issue in MY and its growing importance in VN; a particular attention will be on interactions and trade-offs with other MARE themes.

The action will mostly focus on bachelor’s and master’s levels (revision of curricula, development of new courses and modernization of existing ones, launching of new specialization streams), however it will also address selected aspects of doctoral provision (development of multidisciplinary research agenda, development of organizational capacity for networking and joint research). The MARE e-learning system will be developed in order to enable sharing and dissemination of learning contents across the project network; series of webinars for master’s and PhD students will be piloted and arranged as regular events; interactive e-courses with case studies’ collections will be developed for each of the priority areas. The project is funding by Erasmus+ (KA2, Capacity Building in Higher Education, EAC/A03/2018) with a 3 years duration (2020-2023). The partnership includes universities from Europe (Estonia and Italy), Malaysia and Vietnam.

  • Conference “Climate change in the Asia-Pacific region: from environmental aspects to socioeconomic impacts”. Date: 11-15 October, 2021. Location: Quy Nhon, Vietnam. The Asia-Pacific region is one of the main regional climate systems of the world and is subjected to many climatic hazards (monsoon, El Niño, typhoons, flooding, drought, sea level rise, coastal erosion …). A large part of the Asia-Pacific populations lives in low altitude coastal regions and is thus strongly vulnerable to those hazards. Understanding how the Asia-Pacific regional system will be affected by climate change, from the environmental impacts to the socioeconomic aspects, is thus an important scientific issue. The conference will focus on interdisciplinary studies, and will regroup specialists from all of the disciplines involved in the study of climate change impacts. Indeed, the components of the regional socio-environmental system are strongly interconnected, with interactions within the climate system, as well as between environment and society. An interdisciplinary approach is therefore fundamental to tackle the numerous issues raised by climate change. Registration deadline: September 1, 2021. Location: Bergen, Norway. Climate variability and change is impacting the distributions and productivity of marine species in the North Atlantic. Monitoring and predicting the effects of climate change on the distribution of habitats, and the marine species that occupy them is critical for resource management.  This 4th symposium is part of a series of decadal symposiums organized by ICES, where researchers gather to review the variability of North Atlantic environmental conditions and marine ecosystems over the past decade. Researchers aim to understand the relationship between ecosystem components and how they influence the distribution, abundance and productivity of living marine resources. In addition, researchers will review recent advances in sub-decadal forecasts of ecosystem change. Abstract submission deadline: 27 September 2021. Registration deadline: 27 September 2021. • Symposium: “International Symposium on Small Pelagic Fish: New Frontiers in Science for Sustainable Management”. Date: 7-11 November 2022. Location: Lisbon, Portugal. The in symposium will highlight the state-of-the-art the topics related to the ecology and sustainable management of small pelagic fish (SPF). SPF populations of both marine and inland ecosystems are crucial for ensuring global food security and also play an important role in the transfer of energy in food webs through mid-trophic levels, so understanding processes affecting the dynamics of their populations, their role in marine ecosystems and how these shape robust management practices continue to be a high priority. Global analyses revealed oscillations in the productivity of SPF populations linked to climate variability on various (seasonal to multi-decadal) scales that have resulted in dramatic consequences for ecological and human communities. The exchange of information and ideas drawn from comparing populations across the globe can be particularly insightful as we seek to improve management strategies.
